Sloane Gordey of Calgary, a 2nd year Health Fundamentals & Nursing student at Mount Royal University, and a member of the SAIT Trojans softball team, has been named the first recipient of the Bruce Vance Coaching Scholarship presented by the Girls Prairie League Softball (GPLS). The scholarship will be awarded annually to a post-secondary student when volunteers their time coaching competitive girls softball.
Gordey was selected from a strong field of 10 applicants from throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan, primarily where the GPLS is located by a committee of three GPLS representatives.
Gordey, besides being an honors student, plays on the SAIT Trojans of the Western Collegiate Softball Association and volunteers as a softball coach and clinician in Calgary and area. This past season she coached the U15 West Hills 1 & 2 out of Strathcona. She also has dedicated her time to softball clinics in Olds, Ponoka and Cochrane, and other associations in the region.
“Sloane Gordey is an outstanding choice as the first ever recipient of this scholarship as she exudes passion and commitment to academics, girls softball and coaching," said Bruce Vance. "It was a very difficult decision for the GPLS selection committee and that speaks volumes about our ten applicants, We commend all the applicants for their dedication to coaching young ladies. It is great to see so many young student-athletes involved in giving back to the game and bodes well for a strong future for GPLS."
Gordey receives a $1,000 scholarship from GPLS in honour of Bruce Vance, a founding member of the league and long-time coach of the Prince Albert Aces.
