It was not only a battle to fight cancer over the weekend, as the ‘B’ teams in Girls Prairie League Softball took to the field for their Pink Sox Weekend in Elnora, Huxley and Trochu, AB, but also a battle in the standings, as with the ‘B’ Championship Weekend just two weeks away, it was the last chance to make a move up the standings.
While the St. Albert Angels lead the U12B Division with a 6-2 record, which included four victories in five games at the Pink Sox Weekend, earning single victories over the Olds Pistols and Unity Panthers. Three other teams are right behind them with five victories each, leaving the top spot in the division still open for grabs.
The Irma Tigers, having played nine games already, are 5-4 this season, and lost to St. Albert over the Pink Sox Weekend, finishing 3-2 over the weekend. Trailing them are the North Battleford Bandits and Red Deer Rage, who also have five wins this season, although they have played eight and seven games respectively.
North Battleford was near perfect over the weekend, finishing with four victories and a tie.
At 8-0, the Unity Panthers 03 are the only ‘B’ Division team still undefeated this season, as they sit on top of the U14B Division, just one game up on the Olds Pistols. With five victories over the Pink Sox Weekend, including an 8-0 shutout over the Calahoo Erins, the Panthers have given up only 19 runs this season, the lowest in the U14B Division.
The Olds Pistols had a chance to share that lead, earning four victories to start the Pink Sox Weekend. However, a 17-6 loss to the North Battleford Bandits in their last game of the weekend handed them their first loss and moved them into second place in the standings.
A pair of regional teams hold the top two spots in the U16B Division, as the Central Alberta Impact and East Central Cobras both have just one loss this season. The Impact, went 5-0 during the Pink Sox Weekend, and sit with a 9-1 record, while the Cobras also were perfect in five games, and sit with an 8-1 record.
East Central may be second in the standings currently, but with a game to make up, they could leap into first as they hold the tie breaker with a victory over the Impact on May 14 during the Opening Weekend with an 8-6 win.
The Irma Tigers are 8-1 this season and have a comfortable lead in the U18B Division standings with three more wins than Red Deer, Unity and Lacombe.
With 110 runs scored this season, offence has propelled the Tigers into first in the division. However, Red Deer managed to spoil their perfect Pink Sox Weekend early, picking up a 7-6 victory over the Tigers. While the Bats came alive in the last four games, as Irma put up double-digits in all four, the loss still spoiled the perfect season, but didn’t hurt their hold on first place.
