Support for those with cancer was in full force this past weekend in Red Deer, as the western A Division teams in Prairie League Softball pulled up their pink socks and took to the diamonds for another major weekend of games.
And by the end of the weekend, the hometown Red Deer Rage were on top of the U12A standings, winning five of their six games during the Pink Sox Weekend for a 7-2 start to the season, good enough for first place in the division.
Meanwhile, the U14A Rage went 4-2, including a pair of one-run victories against the St. Albert Angles and Edmonton Warriors to move to 6-2 on the season, sitting second behind the Calgary Kaizen in the Sonnenberg Division.
The U16A Rage had a slow start, dropping three of their first four games, but rebounded on Sunday with a pair of victories, defeating St. Albert 9-5 and the Calgary Adrenaline 8-3, keeping them on top of the Lawrick Division with a 5-4 record.
After only getting in a single game during the opening weekend, the Edmonton Rivercity 01’s allowed just three runs over five games, en route to a perfect 5-0 weekend to continue their perfect season.
Edmonton bested St. Albert 11-1, while also scoring double digit runs against the Rivercity 02s in a 13-1 victory, plus a 10-1 victory over the Calgary Kaizen. Defence played strong all weekend, allowing no runs in an 8-0 victory over the Calgary Adrenaline, as well in a 6-0 victory over the Red Deer Rage.
So far this season, the Rivercity have scored a league high, 70 runs, while allowing a league low five. But they are matched in perfection by their Cumpstone Division rivals from Prince Albert, as the Aces are also 6-0 to start the season, having swept a three-game series with the Lloydminster Liners a week prior at the east Pink Sox Weekend.
After giving up only a single run in their first three games during the Opening Weekend schedule, the Calgary Kaizen U14A found themselves continuing to play shutdown softball during the Pink Sox Weekend, earning three shutout victories over both Edmonton Rivercity teams and the Sherwood Park Storm.
Sporting an 8-0 record, Calgary sits on top of the U14A Sonnenberg Division, having scored 85 runs this season. The Edmonton Warriors did give them a run for their money, however, as their Saturday afternoon game saw the Kaizen come away with their closest victory of the season, edging out Edmonton 8-6. With only eight runs given up this season, the Kaizen are the only U14 team so far who are still in single digits in the runs allowed category on the stat sheet.
With 90 runs scored this season, the Sherwood Park Storm share the U12 Division lead with the Red Deer Rage in that category, but at 5-4 this season, the Storm find themselves in fourth place with a 5-4 record.
A slow start to the Pink Sox Weekend had the Storm going down to the St. Albert 8-3 and Red Deer 7-6, but then the bats came alive to turn the weekend around, as Sherwood Park put up 20 runs in a 20-2 victory over the Strathmore Thunder on Saturday, followed by a 15-0 victory over the Thunder to start Sunday morning.
They finished the weekend with a 12-4 victory over the Calgary Adrenaline, putting them just 1.5 games back of Red Deer in the U12 Division.
